Abacus Science Kit - Survive and Thrive (Year 1, Biological Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 1 (Biological Science) – Survive & Thrive. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about the basic needs of plants and animals including human beings. They will learn to compare and differentiate between healthy and unhealthy plants or find differences and similarities in the needs of humans and pets.

At the end of the activities, in groups or in class, students can discuss their findings. For instance, do all seedlings grow at the same rate?, why do some plants prefer shade and some prefer sunlight?, why do animals have beak?, what do animals need to survive?, and many more.  

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it Fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by designing and building miniature models of a plant or animal habitat which they can share and discuss in class. This creative learning method provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
