Abacus Science Kit - Any Day Outdoors (Year 1, Earth & Space Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 1 (Earth & Space Sciences) – Any Day Outdoors. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to identify and understand weather and seasonal changes, in addition to its effect on our daily life. They will also learn the symbols like sun for sunny, clouds for cloudy, and more to describe weathers. Likewise, related topics like temperature is also included in this sequence.  

At the end of each activity, in groups or in class, students can discuss their findings. For instance, what types of different weather have they experienced? does weather change their tasks for that particular day?, and many more.  

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it Fun!

Some ways to make learning more fun and applying students’ learning to practice are to draw characteristics of weathers as drawings, creating a weather chart, creating wind meter using wire hanger, planning an outdoor activity like a picnic. Discuss in class how weather can effect what and how they plan a picnic. This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
