Abacus Science Kit - Wear on Earth (Year 5, Earth & Space Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 5 (Earth & Space Science) – Wear on Earth. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities (such as creating a model) to investigate how and why weathering and erosion causes physical changes on Earth. For instance, children can use the chalk (representing one rock) and assorted sandpaper (other rocks) provided in this kit to observe the physical changes after scraping the chalk against the sandpaper. Then discuss the observations, so students learn that physical changes occurs when rocks rub on each other or other things in the nature.

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice.

Let the students design and test a strategy to control erosion for an area in the school. This activity will provide students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, recommend modifications to their design for better results. Thereby, reinforcing their learning.
