Abacus Science Kit - Chemistry in the Kitchen (Year 6, Chemical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 6 (Chemical Science) – Chemistry in the Kitchen. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to explore about the reversible and irreversible physical and chemical changes whilst enjoying the process of food preparation and cooking.

Students will learn how reversible change works by evaporating the salt solution to recover the salt. Likewise, children will work with ingredients like milk and vinegar to learn about irreversible chemical changes, effects of heat on food, and more. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Students can apply their knowledge on reversible and irreversible change by designing food experience with an irreversible change. Children can discuss their observations and findings regarding any physical or chemical changes as it provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
