Abacus Science Kit - Sound Studio (Year 2, Physical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 2 (Physical Science) – Sound Studio. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about sound energy and how various sounds can be produced with varying objects and actions. It can be something as simple as playing a recording and comparing it with another student speaking in real time. Then discuss which one is clearer with reasons to support their findings. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, discussion, and critical thinking.

Another core topic covered in this sequence is vibration - vibrations travels to the ears and difference between vibrations felt while producing sounds (back and forth movement) and when swallowing (up and down movement) food. Students will also learn if the medium that sounds travel through affects the clarity. 

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice!

Students can speak or sing with their hands placed on the neck  or they can work in pairs or groups to take turns speaking with mouths closed into an inflated balloon while the others hold the balloon to feel the vibrations. They can also tap two metal spoons with various intensity to see if that effects the sound produced.

At the end of each activity, discuss the process and their findings as this provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
