Abacus Science Kit - Take, Shape & Create (Year 2, Chemical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 2 (Chemical Sciences) – Take, Shape & Create. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about properties of materials and how they can be physically changed without changing their properties. For instance, students can fold and cut a piece of paper to learn how the shape changes but not the weight, colour, or its material. Likewise, they can choose another material like playdough to compare the difference and similarities in properties such as flexibility, elasticity, and more.  

At the end of each activity, in groups or in class, students can discuss their findings. For instance, which materials are better for creating sculpture?, which ones hold heavy materials better?, does these physical properties help determine where, how, and why these materials can be used?, and many more.  

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, discussion, and critical thinking.

Make it Fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by creating a 3D sculpture using materials (kitchen sponge, rubber band, cotton balls, and more) included in this kit. Then present and discuss the process of creating their sculptures. This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
