Abacus Science Kit - Access All Areas (Year 4, Physical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 4 (Physical Science) – Access All Areas. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will take part in hands-on activities to explore forces such as friction, gravity, magnetism, and buoyancy through practical challenges. For instance, they will design a makeshift vehicle that can travel safely across different surfaces and conditions. For example, students will tie a string around a box filled with various materials and transport it across different terrains to observe and discuss the results. In class, students can discuss how the way the box is tied affect the movement? How and why different surface conditions affect how the box moves?

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Students can apply their knowledge by designing a solution (taking into consideration factors such as weight, shape, and more) to move across difficult terrain and explain how forces affect their design using a labelled drawing. This activity allows students to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
