Abacus Science Kit - Space Innovators (Year 6, Earth & Space Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 6 (Earth & Space Science) – Space Innovators. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to explore how the position of sun, earth, and moon impacts the phenomena of day/night, seasons, and more.

In addition, they will create 2D and 3D models to see the changes in conditions at different times of the day and then, discuss their findings. For instance, at 9AM it is bright, so you do not need the lights on. At 6:00PM in winter, it is dark, the lights need to be turned on, and they might even see the moon. However, in summer it is still bright at that same time. 

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

You can make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by role playing day and night with the children. For this role play, the classroom needs to be darkened. Then, using the torch supplied, create a single source of light in the centre of the classroom. The students can then take turns to face towards or against the light to demonstrate day and night. 

As they roleplay, discuss their observations and findings - how and why results changed as they moved. This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
