Abacus Science Kit - Dig Deep (Year 3, Earth & Space Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 3 (Earth & Space Science) – Dig Deep. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to identify soils and rocks, learn its features, then sort and classify them. Students can collect a handful of soil from school grounds, place it on a white paper, observe its colour, use magnifiers to view the finer details of soil, listen to the sound and feel its consistency as they rub the soil between their fingers. In the process, they will learn the importance of senses for soil investigation. Likewise, students can observe rocks, check for any distinct patterns on rocks, hardness of rocks, and discuss their use such as engraving, buildings walls, and more.

At the end of each activity, in groups or in class, students can discuss and investigate their learning process and their findings. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, investigation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by playing a game of 'who am I?'. Students can work in groups, describe features of a rock and guess the name of the rock. You can also provide students with a design brief to create ideas of sustainable creation. These activities will provide students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
