Maths Intervention

Maths intervention or numeracy intervention resources are a great tool to help students who have fallen behind in their maths learning journey and need special attention to enable them to catch up with other students.

The goal of these tools is not to shame struggling students for falling behind. Rather, they’re designed to give students access to alternative tools that might be more effective for their particular learning style than traditional classroom instruction.

Browse through our collection of bond blocks that illustrate abstract maths concepts in a concrete way, making maths less intimidating than it would otherwise be.

Bond Blocks are a great maths intervention tool for students in Years 3 to 6. Generally, the blocks are of different lengths, and each of these blocks correspond to a different number. This design makes it easy to visually differentiate the products even when they’re piled together in a messy way.

Aside from the Bond Blocks themselves, some of the kits also contain coloured counters and beads. Together, these can help students who have special learning needs grasp vital maths concepts better than they otherwise would in a conventional classroom setting.

Activity Ideas:

  • Counting. Use equally sized units of Bond Blocks to demonstrate how to count forwards and backwards. When you lay down one block, say ‘one’, then say ‘2’ whilst you lay down the next block and so on. Then, remove one block at a time whilst counting backwards (‘5’, ‘4’, ‘3’, ‘2’, ‘1’).
  • Addition. Each block has a length corresponding to the number printed on it. So a block marked ‘1’ would be shorter than a block marked ‘2’, which in turn would be shorter than a block marked ‘3’ and so on. At the same time, the length of the block labelled ‘3’ is equivalent to the length of the blocks ‘1’ and ‘2’ put together. Therefore, to answer addition problems using Bond Blocks, all a student has to do is to find the block that’s the same length as the two blocks of addends put together.
  • Subtraction. The same principle above applies here, albeit in reverse. If the problem is ‘3’ minus ‘2’, the student only has to remove the block with the number ‘2’ on it, leaving them with the difference, which is ‘1’.
