Abacus Science Kit - Finding Features (Foundation, Biological Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Foundation (Biological Science) – Finding Features. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to use their senses for exploring and observing the features of plants and animals. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Using their senses will also teach students the importance of using them whilst learning about plants and animals. For example, students can use magnifiers to observe the finer details, then group plants or animals as per their patterns and shape, or they can also describe its smell. Likewise, students can identify animals based on their features such as tails, eyes, fur, and more.

At the end of the lessons, in groups or in class, students can discuss which senses were used to make those observation. For instance, why dry leaves make more noise, why humans and bird use tongue, and many more.  

Make it Fun!

Some ways to make learning more fun and applying students’ learning to practice are to play a game of ‘who am I?’ by describing features or mimicking movements of different animals.

Students can also design digital or physical model of plant or animal of their choice which they can share and discuss in class. This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
