Abacus Science Kit - Scorching Swings & Slides (Year 3, Physical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 3 (Physical Science) – Scorching Swings & Slides. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about heat related topics such as transferring heat from one object to another, its impact on temperature changes and conductivity of various materials (wood, plastic and metals). They can use a burning candle or the hot water bottle to learn regarding sources of heat, experience how heat is transferred from those sources to their hands, and how quickly their hands cool down without the heat sources. 

At the end of each activity, in groups or in class, students can discuss and investigate their learning process and their findings. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by designing a playground. In class, students can discuss heat transference, how conductivity of different materials resulted in choosing specific materials for designing the playground, and more. This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
