Abacus Science Kit - Making Sense of Changes (Year 3, Chemical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Foundation (Chemical Science) – Making Sense of Changes. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about the properties of solids and liquids. They will further investigate how heat leads to change of states of solids using the resources within this kit. For instance, the hot water bottle can be used as a warm liquid source to demonstrate how solids when in contact with heat changes its state. Likewise, the ice cube trays, food colour, pipe cleaners, feathers, and more can be used to create ice monsters. Place it in resealable bag, and observe how the ice monster by the end of the day. 

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ knowledge to practice by playing a race game. Simply pour different kinds of liquids on the baking sheet provided to race your liquids. 

At the end of the lessons, in groups or in class, students can discuss their observation. For instance, why did one of the liquids reach the finish line before the other liquids? Did the liquids finish slower or faster when a heat source was added? Why? 

This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
