Description / Abacus Science Kit - Shelter in a Storm (Foundation, Chemical Science)
This kit includes most of the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Foundation (Chemical Science) – Shelter in a Storm. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections® website.
Design a Shelter for a Storm
In this sequence, students participate in hands-on investigations to explore and observe the properties of different materials. They apply their knowledge and findings to design a shelter that can keep a toy dry and protected during a storm.
The teaching sequence is structured across seven lessons, with each lesson focusing on a specific topic:
- Lesson 1 - What is shelter and why do we need it?
- Lesson 2 - What is used to make shelter?
- Lesson 3 - Stiff or Bendy?
- Lesson 4 - Which frame material is best?
- Lesson 5 - Can it be torn?
- Lesson 6 - Will it let water in?
- Lesson 7 - Designing a shelter
Students can work individually, in small groups, or as a class to discuss their investigations, evaluate their findings, and reflect on their learning. This student-centred approach encourages scientific inquiry, collaboration, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of materials and their properties.
