Abacus Science Kit - Light Imitates Art (Year 5, Physical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 5 (Physical Science) – Light Imitates Art. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about light, reflection, refraction, and shadow. In this sequence, children will learn how light is transferred, what happens when its path is interrupted and how lights can be used for artistic purposes as well. Students will observe different colours of light combining and be able to identify the colours formed when different colours are combined together.

Make a small hole in a box, then let the students look inside the box with no light source. Then, place an object, make another hole to add a light source (eg: torch), look inside the box again. At the end of each activity, in groups or in class, students can discuss their observations, recommended modifications to see the object better, affect on the shadow due to position of light source, and more.

This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by designing a light artwork to feature their understanding of light, shadow, reflection, refraction, and colours of light. This activity will provide students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
