Abacus Science Kit - Adapt to Survive (Year 5, Biological Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 5 (Biological Science) – Adapt to Survive. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

Students investigate how plants and animals survive in different environments by exploring their structural and behavioural adaptations. Through engaging, hands-on activities, they learn how special features and behaviours help living things meet their needs and stay safe. For example, cats use claws for hunting and defence, echidnas use spikes to protect themselves, and birds migrate to find food and suitable living conditions.

Using the resources included in this kit, such as tongs, pegs and toothpicks, children take part in interactive investigations that simulate animal feeding behaviours. By using different tools to collect various food items, students discover how the shape and size of an animal’s mouth or beak can influence the food it eats. These activities encourage students to explore, experiment and think critically about how adaptations help animals survive.

Make it fun!

Students apply their learning by designing and constructing a model of a real or imaginary plant or animal. They explain how its adaptations help it survive in its environment, combining creativity with scientific understanding.

At the end of the sequence, students share their models and discuss their understanding of structural and behavioural adaptations. These discussions provide opportunities to reflect on investigations, communicate findings and reinforce key scientific concepts.
