Abacus Science Kit - Make it Move! (Foundation, Physical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^® (Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Foundation (Physical Science) – Make it Move! The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities and games to learn about movement and how factors like size, shape, and material of an object effects movement. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

The resources in this kit are specifically put together to carry out this teaching sequence. For instance, dowel and card paper can be used to make a loop glider. Children can make the loops of the glider bigger or smaller to observe if that makes a difference in the movement. 

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ knowledge to practice by playing a game of Skittles. The children can use different size balls such as tennis, table tennis, and polystyrene balls to knock over the skittles.

At the end of the lessons, in groups or in class, students can discuss their observation. For instance, how and why does the shape and size of balls affect the way it moves? Does the smaller or bigger and heavier or lighter move further?

This provides students a chance to reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
