Abacus Science Kit - Communication Matters (Year 5, Chemical Science)

This kit includes all the resources required to carry out the Primary Connections^®(Australian Curriculum Version 9) teaching sequence for Year 5 (Chemical Science) – Communication Matters. The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to classroom settings whilst the lessons plans, science journals, and resource sheets are free to download from the Primary Connections^® website.

Student-centred Interactive Learning

In this sequence, students will participate in hands-on activities to learn about the states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) and determine its properties. Students can use cornflour, water and containers to observe the physical changes before, during, and after it is mixed. Then, pour the mixture into different size and shape containers to observe the shape changes. Likewise, use an inflated balloon to discuss what's inside and how some gases can be poured due to its density. 

At the end of the lessons, in groups or in class, students can discuss and investigate their learning process and their findings. This student-centred approach encourages exploration, observation, and critical thinking.

Make it fun!

Make learning more fun and apply students’ learning to practice by carrying out a role play to demonstrate behaviours of solid, liquid, and gas. This role-playing activity provides students a chance to experience and reflect on their investigation and findings, thereby, reinforcing their learning.
