Student-Centred Science Learning

Through interactive investigations and practical activities, children explore the causes of bush fires, the impact on people and the community. The teaching sequence is split into seven lessons to explore specific topics as below:

• Lesson 3 - Carbon dioxide and the carbon cycle
• Lesson 4 - Measuring biomass
• Lesson 5 - Ice core evidence

• Lesson 6 - Factors affecting the rate and intensity of bushfires
• Lesson 7 - Design to survive

These inquiry-based activities encourage students to develop scientific skills through observation, data collection, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Design a Fire Action Plan

Students can apply their understanding by designing a fire action plan for a specific target audience to minimize the level of carbon dioxide.

Students can work individually, in groups, or as a class to discuss their investigations, evaluate their findings, and reflect on their learning. This student-centred approach promotes scientific inquiry, collaboration, and deeper understanding.
