Abacus Science Kit - Forces & Sport (Year 7, Physical Science)

Support the delivery of the Science Connections^® teaching sequence for Year 7 (Physical Science) – Forces & Sport, aligned with the secondary science (Australian Curriculum Version 9). This comprehensive science kit includes most of the materials needed to deliver engaging, hands-on lessons that explore forces and motion including impact of mass, size and direction.

The teaching sequence is flexible and adaptable to a range of classroom settings. Lesson plans, teaching notes, and lab tech notes are available as free downloads from the Science Connections^® website.

Student-Centred Science Learning

Through interactive investigations and practical activities, children explore topics like gravitational force, balanced and unbalanced force plus more.

The teaching sequence is split into seven lessons to explore specific topics as below:

• Lesson 1 - Forces in sport and physical activities
• Lesson 2 - Balanced and unbalanced forces
• Lesson 3 - Does mass affect motion?
• Lesson 4 - Does the amount of force affect motion?
• Lesson 5 - Why are surfaces important in sport?
• Lesson 6 - Controlling the curve
• Lesson 7 - Designing a forces infographic

These inquiry-based activities encourage students to develop scientific skills through observation, data collection, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Design an infographic poster

Students bring their creativity to life by designing an infographic poster that demonstrates their understanding of forces and how they affect movement in a sport or physical activity, with a focus on supporting new or developing players.

At the end of the activity, students participate in a gallery walk to share their investigations, discuss and evaluate their findings, and reflect on their learning.

This student-centred approach promotes scientific inquiry, collaboration, and deeper understanding.
