There’s so much more to the humble metal spoon than being just another kitchen utensil.
Due to its composition, these lightweight spoons can be used for a variety of experiments. For instance, spoons can be used as makeshift percussion instruments, to demonstrate the properties of sound, magnetism, heat and more.
Science with spoons
- Tie a spoon on the string, move it back and forth to make it strike on a hard surface to demonstrate sound and vibration. Replace the metal spoon with a wooden spoon to observe the difference.
- Let the spoon sit in warm water, and let the children place it on their palm to observe and feel how heat transfers from the water to your palm.
After each activity, discuss the students' findings, to encourage observation and critical thinking.
